Pallastunturi-Ounastunturi National Park (area 500sq.km / 200sq.mi) is typical of the barren upland regions of northern
Lapland. During spring the deep snow is often covered in a layer of supportable crust which makes it possible to travel
easily off trail, skijoring or sledding in any direction.

Leia and Thunder are eagerly climbing the last hill before we reach the plateau.

It looks cold, but today's temperature of only -4°C (25°F) is the warmest we've had this winter.

The windblown trail is invisible in many places - at least to the human eye. Malamutes have an innate
sense of direction and have no trouble navigating in roadless land.

Thunder's glowing in the afternoon sun.

The days are still short but the hours of daylight are increasing amazingly fast and by the end of April
we'll be able to stay out on the trail until late in the evening and still have daylight when we head home.
