The interest in dogs and sled dogs is a family affair;
Marit's grandfather mushed sled dogs in Lapland in the 1930s and her grandmother and the legendary sled dog driver Leonhard Seppala were cousins.
With family roots in both Finland and Sweden we spend time in both countries with our dogs.
FINLAND
Our base in Finland is in the village of Hetta in Finnish Lapland, 300km north of the Arctic Circle. This place offers a secluded location with great trails for training in the nearby mountains
and lots of space where our Malamutes can run and play!
Our long, snowy winters and cool summers are ideal for Malamutes and we are surrounded by a vast wilderness that offers
endless opportunities during all seasons. In theory, we could reach the Arctic Ocean in a week by dog sled without crossing a single highway. Perhaps we will try this some day?
Northern Lapland is on the same latitude as Brooks Range in Alaska and we also have a similar climate. Our winter begins in October and ends in mid-May. During a long period of
the year our trails are hard packed and frozen, and the temperature below -30° centigrade - putting Malamute feet and coats to the test. While the winter is long we also have a beautiful summer with more than two months of midnight sun.
SWEDEN
Our home in Sweden is located in the village of Nedre Bäck, near the city of Skellefteå and the Gulf of Bothnia.
This is where we spend most of summer and fall, enjoying the close proximity to the ocean and local club training activities for our dogs. Our kennel prefix, Northernmost, is registered with the Swedish Kennel Club which is a member of FCI.
